Welcome to the website of Dutch author Ineke Riem.
Ineke (born in 1980) is a writer and poet from Amsterdam. She is known for her imaginative style and detailed ink drawings. Her work (published by Uitgeverij De Arbeiderspers) includes two novels, two collections of short stories and another two of poetry. Ineke enjoys writing about eccentric characters, nature and history.
She studied Dutch Literature at Groningen University (NL) and University College London (UK). She also studied a year at Rietveld Art Academy (NL). Her first novel ‘Seven Attempts to Wake Up a Loved One’ - a modern fairytale with a twist - was awarded the Bronze Owl Prize for best debut in 2013 and was shortlisted for the 2014 Academica Literature Prize. In 2021 a poem about her mother's doubts regarding Ineke’s carreer choice was awarded the Flemish Melopee Poetry Prize.
Ineke Riem is currently working on her third novel, inspired by Native Hawaiian protests against the construction of a large telescope at the top of a sacred mountain. A female Dutch astronomer discovers it was her ancestor who was the first astronomer to set foot on this mountain - but can she still agree with his actions when she becomes friends with a local family?
